How To Cope With Worms- Treatment and Prevention

Symptoms

Roundworms vomiting, dull coat, diarrhea, pot belly, loss of weight
Hookworms diarrhea, anemia, bloody stools
Tape worms "rice" on anal area or in stools, diarrhea or vomiting
Whipworms loss of weight, diarrhea
Threadworms profuse watery diarrhea, lung infections

Puppies

A bad case of worms can seriously interfere with your puppy's development.

Puppies should be de-wormed at 2-3 weeks and at 4-6 weeks of age.  Worm immunity in puppies only comes after about six months of age. Most puppies will therefore have worms, usually as a result of dormant worm larvae from their mother.

How to prevent worms

  • Control pests such as fleas and lice which can be hosts for tapeworms.

  • Remove all stools from your garden daily.

  • Dirt should not be used for the kennel floor. A water tight surface that can be hosed down is best, but gravel is also preferential to dirt.

  • Make sure that any meat fed to your dog is cooked thoroughly.

  • Lawns should be kept short.
