Before deciding
to buy a dog, it's very important that you are aware of all the costs
involved. Most people only take the cost of the dog itself into account,
and can end up with quite a surprise!
We've listed
most of the costs you can expect to see over the lifetime of your dog (
ten to fifteen years). Some are optional costs, but we have
included them as well so that you can see all the possibilities.

Dog Food
There are
many different types of dog foods, and you can expect to pay between
$15 and $40 per month, depending on the size of your dog. Your dog may
also require vitamin supplements - these will cost about $10 per
month.
Shelter
Dog house -

Dog bed - $40.00
If you ever
decide to go away on holiday, you will need someone to look after
your dog. Alternatively, you may need to pay for boarding. This can
cost from $15 and up.
Grooming
Dog Shampoo -
$6.00
If your dog is
of a type that requires special grooming, you will need to take him
to dog groomer. You can expect to pay anywhere from $10.00 to $50.00
there, depending again on the size of your dog.
Veterinary Costs

Annual Check
ups - Once a year to make sure your dog is healthy, and give him his
shots. $35 and up.

Teeth
Cleaning - If you don't brush your dog's teeth regularly, it can
become a problem and the vet will have to do it. This can cost up to $100
and may involve anesthetic.

Illness -
Like us, dogs will get sick from time to time. It can be something
minor, but it can be serious at times too. Nursing him back to
health can be expensive. $50.00 and up.

Spaying/Neutering - Surgery can cost $50.00 and up. Its an important
item to consider if you want to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
